Qualifying for Weight Loss Surgery
At Advanced Surgical Associates, an important part of our weight loss program is to determine whether you qualify for weight loss surgery. Qualifying depends on many factors including your current weight, your history of weight loss and whether you’re suffering from co-morbidities such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and high blood pressure. We provide a bariatric orientation seminar and education session that is mandatory for all potential candidates.
After the weight loss surgery seminar you can schedule a consultation with one of our bariatric surgeons where you’ll discuss your weight loss history and current weight-related health conditions.
There are several medically accepted criteria for defining morbid obesity and determining whether or not you may qualify for our weight loss surgery program. You are likely to be morbidly obese if you:
- Are more than 100 pounds over your ideal body weight
- Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or over
- Have a BMI of 35 or over and diagnosed significant co-morbidities, such as high blood pressure or diabetes
- Haven’t been able to maintain healthy body weight even with medically supervised dieting
Weight loss surgeons and health insurance companies each have a set of criteria to determine if you qualify for a bariatric procedure. It is important that you contact your insurance company and our office to find out if there are any additional criteria necessary to qualify for surgery.
The key to the success of bariatric surgery is being committed to a long-term lifestyle change. To achieve success, you must be prepared to stick to a strict diet and exercise routine. For those that qualify, the journey is tough, to be sure, but also potentially very rewarding.
