The Role of Family After Bariatric Surgery
As we’ve discussed before, weight loss surgery requires significant lifestyle changes in order to be successful. These lifestyle changes do not come easily and certainly are a challenge to maintain. The job of maintaining a lifestyle change is made much easier by having an excellent support system built around you. An integral and very important part of that support system is the family unit. Families can provide for the needs and support of bariatric patients better than almost any other person involved in their lives. A supportive family can not only help their loved one, but also help themselves as they understand how the body works to lose weight and how a healthy weight can be achieved through a lifestyle change. Families who participate in their loved ones’ weight loss goals can help themselves and others achieve a healthier, happier life.
The first, and most important part, in involving the family in your weight loss goals after bariatric surgery is to make sure they understand exactly what you have gone through – and what you will be going through. Giving them this perspective allows them to put themselves in your shoes and understand, more clearly, the struggles that come with obesity and the opportunities that come with bariatric surgery.
Patients who are lucky enough to have an excellent family support system may find that they lose weight more quickly, more safely and more easily. Of course, the value of bariatric support groups, both online and in person, and self-motivation techniques cannot be understated. These, too, have to be employed to make sure that you achieve your goals both now and well into the future.Back To All Posts
