Eating Out After Weight Loss Surgery

January 27, 2012

We’re often asked how your lifestyle will change after bariatric surgery, especially as it relates to eating out at restaurants and other food service establishments. The limitations of eating out after surgery are certainly a consideration that has to be made as part of the decision to undergo surgery. Further, there must be an understanding that going out to lunch ad dinner cannot be as regular an occurrence as it was prior to surgery. It is also important to remember that when you do go out to eat, you should find restaurants that are able and willing to modify their dishes to reduce the fat, sugar and sodium content in their dishes. A few examples are:

  • A seemingly healthy piece of grilled fish or grilled chicken, which actuality may have been prepared with plenty of butter slathered on it to make it moist and taste better.
  • Chinese cooking that may have a significant amount of sodium or MSG, which can hurt hydration. It can also raise blood pressure.
  • The list goes on and on.

Ultimately, the trick to eating out is moderation, just like everything else after bariatric surgery. We don’t pretend to think that you will always stay at home and make only the healthiest dishes – that is certainly not a realistic expectation. However, understanding the food that you may be consuming at a restaurant and learning how you can make it healthier, can be a great way to enjoy eating out while following your post bariatric surgery diet.
