Caffeine after Bariatric Surgery

January 4, 2012

We are often asked if caffeine consumption is appropriate after bariatric surgery. The answer, as with most dietary issues after weight loss surgery, is that moderation is the key to a successful post bariatric surgery lifestyle. If the patient is able to keep their consumption of caffeine at a reasonable level, it usually does not pose a significant issue to their post-surgical lifestyle.

However it should be noted that some caffeinated items can cause trouble, especially those who are most sensitive to the compound. For example:

  • Some caffeinated drinks and especially coffee are very acidic and can irritate stomach pouch, especially when consumed in large quantities or on an empty stomach.
  • Caffeine is also diuretic, which means that it increases the possibility for dehydration. hydration is one of the most important success tools after bariatric surgery and anything that removes water from the body in artificial manner is detrimental.
  • Caffeinated products also tend to be high in sugar (sodas) or fat (milk chocolate). In both cases, this negates the post-bariatric surgery diet.

We do not expect our patients to eliminate every product that could be unhealthy, but we do ask that they consult with us and consume certain food and drink, like those with caffeine, in moderation.
