Head vs. Body – Are you really hungry?

July 1, 2011

So you think you are hungry – but are you really? Is your body hungry, or is it head hunger? Head hunger can be caused by many different triggers, but emotions are the biggest culprits.

Emotions such as boredom, loneliness or sadness aren’t fun, and we all feel them. The first reaction for some is to distract ourselves from them. A quick, easy and often satisfying distraction is eating. Unfortunately, eating when your body isn’t hungry just adds extra calories to your diet. It can also cause you to overeat because you don’t know when you are full.

The media can often be a huge cause of head hunger. How many food commercials were played during the commercial break of your favorite show? These ads want you to see such enticing images of food that you rush to their establishment regardless of if you are hungry or not. You must resist the urge. Before you order that extra snack, ask yourself: do you really want this?

These same places are also responsible for our misconception of correct portion sizes.  We want our money’s worth when we go out, but unfortunately, many times the portions are two or three sizes too big. But our head thinks we shouldn’t waste food. Sometimes, we need to think about our waist over waste.

The best way to avoid head hunger is to take a second before you order and think: “Am I really hungry?”
