Exercise is a Key Successful Weight Loss
After weight loss surgery you are on your way to a brand new body and healthier lifestyle. However, it is only one of the many tools you will need to achieve overall health. Exercise is going to be a vital part of the journey toward that end. Patients who exercise lose more weight and keep it off longer.
In addition to losing more weight and maintaining it, patients who exercise are not only healthier, but may be happier too. Exercise releases chemicals in the body that stimulate happiness and mitigate depression and anxiety. Plus, exercise improves heart health and increases energy. Patients must start slow and work to build up the amount of time they spend exercising every day. Almost immediately after surgery the staff will ask you to walk around for a few minutes. This is to get you moving to help you heal faster and avoid blood clots. Later, walking will be one of the most effective and easiest exercises you can do. It will improve circulation and your blood sugar levels will stabilize over time as well.
There is no good reason not to exercise. If you have knee or back problems there are ways to get the exercise your body needs without putting either one under additional strain, such as swimming. If you have been bound by excess body weight for a long time it will become easier to move around and you will find freedom in that movement. This is reason enough to get up and start moving. You have nothing to lose, except the weight.
Remember always follow your surgeon’s instructions for exercise.Back To All Posts
