The Gold Standard
Gastric bypass surgery is widely considered to be the gold standard in weight loss surgery procedures. Even though it is the most invasive of all the bariatric procedures we perform, by combining restriction and malabsorption, it also offers the greatest weight loss potential of any surgical weight loss procedure.
It works so well because both cutting away approximately 90% of the existing stomach pouch AND bypassing part of the small intestine both restricts the amount of food you can eat and lessens the absorption through the small intestine walls.
As a result, gastric bypass has become the most popular bariatric procedure in the United States. Generally speaking, on average gastric bypass patients can lose up to 80% of their excess weight and can improve or resolve most comorbidities (diseases associated with obesity) including:
- Type-2 Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure
- High Cholesterol
- Sleep Apnea
While the gastric bypass procedure is not for everyone it should be on the table as an option when considering weight-loss surgery. Depending on the patient’s general health, their recovery potential and their susceptibility to infection, gastric bypass surgery may or may not be the right procedure for them. Consult with your primary physician and your bariatric surgeon to determine if gastric bypass surgery is right for you. To learn more about qualification criteria and the procedure itself, you can attend one of our free monthly seminars held at one of two locations in New Jersey.Back To All Posts
