Hair Loss After Gastric Bypass

December 3, 2010

Every bariatric surgery patient has the potential to lose hair after weight loss surgery and this may occur at any point after surgery. While there are many reasons for hair loss including genetics and stress, weight loss surgery reduces nutrient and vitamin intake after surgery. This reduction may cause a shock to the body and a side effect may be hair loss. Gastric bypass patients may have a higher chance of losing their hair due to the procedure’s restriction and malabsorption of calories that combine for faster weight loss.

This is a common scenario and in most cases once the patient has stabilized their weight, the hair will begin to grow back, often reaching its former fullness. for more information on hair loss please contact our office.

To avoid or minimize hair loss we suggest following your post-bariatric diet as prescribed by your surgeon as closely as possible. Do not eat less than prescribed to lose more weight. Not only can it be dangerous, but it can also worsen the hair loss problem.

If you do seek treatment for the hair loss (even though this may be a temporary condition), please advise us before you start treatment. It is important that we are aware of all medical treatment you undergo after surgery.
