Am I a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?
At Advanced Surgical Associates, our Weight Loss Program is designed to determine whether you qualify for weight loss surgery. We provide an educational orientation session that is mandatory for all potential candidates. Then, you can schedule a consultation with one of our bariatric surgeons at which we will discuss your weight loss history and current weight-related health conditions. Before you have surgery, we require that you undergo psychological, medical and nutritional evaluations to ensure that you are both physically and emotionally ready.
Here are some tools to help you determine if you are morbidly obese and potentially a candidate for weight loss surgery.
There are several medically accepted criteria for defining morbid obesity. You are likely to be morbidly obese if you are:
- More than 100 pounds over your ideal body weight
- Have Body Mass Index (BMI) or over 40, or
- Have a BMI of over 35 and are experiencing severe negative health effects, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, related to being severely overweight
- Unable to achieve a healthy body weight for a sustained period of time, even through medically supervised dieting
Weight loss surgeons and health insurance companies each have a set of criteria to determine if you qualify for a bariatric procedure. But the first step is yours. We hope that this website will give you the important information you need to contact ASA to begin a conversation and start the prequalification process.
